5 women die in Ludhiana road mishap; seven persons injured

Five women pilgrims were killed and seven other persons injured in a collision between a jeep and an Innova on National Highway number 95 at Dhatt village, 25km from here, on Sunday morning. Immediately after the collision, two Scorpios coming from Ludhiana rammed into the Innova from the rear on the Ludhiana-Ferozepur road, leading to disruption of traffic on the highway for more than three hours.

The deceased were identified as Paramjit Kaur (45), her niece Veerpal Kaur (16), Harpal Kaur (45), Parvinder Kaur (55) and Kulwinder Kaur (38), all residents of Bahora village in Moga district.

They were among the 11 women who were on their way to pay obeisance at a gurdwara at Jhande village in Ludhiana district. The incident, which took place at 8.42am.

The Mullanpur police booked the jeep driver, Kuldip Singh of Mehron village, for rash driving. Kuldip, who was injured, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Moga.

Paramjit Singh, his wife Simranjit Kaur, Amarjit Kaur, Kuldip Singh and Jasprit Singh, all of Bahora village, were admitted to Mediways Hospital, Ludhiana, while Amarjit Kaur was taken to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) here.

Ludhiana resident Ajit Singh, who was driving the Innova, said he was going to Gurdwara Sri Nanaksar Kaleran (Jagraon) when a jeep collided with his vehicle. Then, two Scorpios rammed into the Innova. However, Ajit escaped with minor injuries and was discharged after first aid.

Mohammad Jamil, station house officer (SHO) of Mullanpur Dakha police station, said Paramjit Kaur, Harpal and Kulwinder died on the spot, while Veerpal and Parvinder succumbed to injuries on the way to the hospital.

Paramjit Singh said they left their village around 7.30am for Jhande village to attend a religious function. "As we reached Dhatt village, driver Kuldip Singh started complaining about the poor state of the road. Suddenly, the jeep went out of control and hit the Innova," he said. "When I regained consciousness, I found myself in hospital," he added.

Ludhiana (rural) senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurprit Singh Toor visited the spot.

Drugs recovered from 2 jail inmates

The Ludhiana Central jail staff seized smack, narcotic powder and 175 sedative pills from two inmates on Wednesday evening, after the accused were trying to smuggle the narcotics into the jail, after a court appearance. The contraband was hidden in their underwear and the police got wind of it, when the inmates struggled to walk into the jail.
