The growing number of rape cases has become a concern for the government. Even the issue was discussed during the recently-held assembly session. Till March 25 this year, the day when the issue was discussed in the assembly, a total of 22 cases of rape have been reported in Ludhiana, the highest in the state.
Six more rape cases have been reported in the city in the past three days.
In the first incident, a 15-year-old girl of Guru Gobind Singh Nagar of Tibba Road registered a case against his elder brother, Jagdish, 24, in Basti Jodhewal police station. Taking swift action, the police arrested the accused.
The victim complained that her brother raped her around a year back and it continued till recently. She alleged that his brother used to thrash her when she resisted.
Inspector Balwinder Singh, SHO at Basti Jodhewal police station, said the police arrested the accused on Tuesday.
In another incident, a man raped an eight-year-old girl in Thakkarwal village. The Sadar police registered a case against the accused and arrested him on Wednesday. The accused has been identified as Charanjit Singh, 29, an electrician by profession and a resident of Thakkarwal village. On Thursday, the police produced him before the court which sent him in two-day police custody.
The victim's father said his daughter was waiting for the vegetable vender outside their house when the accused came there and lured her by saying that he would give vegetables from his garden. Then the accused took her to his house, raped her and threatened to not tell about it to anyone. But the girl narrated the whole story before her father.
In the third incident, a 13-year-old boy raped a girl, 6, in Azad Nagar of Basti Jodhewal area. The Basti Jodhewal police registered a case against the accused and arrested him. The accused was produced before the court on Thursday. The court sent the accused to observation home on judicial remand.
According to the father of the victim, her daughter was playing hide and seek with the accused and other children on Tuesday. In the meantime, the accused took her to a house and raped.
In the fourth case, the Haibowal police registered a case against one Kuldeep Kumar, 21, of PAU and arrested him for raping a minor. The police produced him before the court on Thursday. The court sent him to Ludhiana Central Jail on judicial remand.
The accused was living with his paternal grandparents in PAU. The girl lives in Dashmesh Nagar. Inspector Amarjit Singh, SHO of Haibowal police station, said the father of the victim alleged in the FIR registered against the accused that the accused took his daughter to PAU and raped her.
In the fifth incident, the Koomkalan police station arrested a youth on charges of abduction and rape of a minor girl. The accused has been identified as Jagpal Singh alias Neeta, 22, of Katani Kalan. The accused abducted the girl on the pretext of marriage and established physical relation with her.
The accused abducted her on March 12. A case of abduction was registered against the accused, following which the police arrested him on Thursday. The police added charge of rape in the FIR against the accused.
In the sixth case, the Focal Point police arrested three persons, including a woman, on charges of abduction and rape. The accused have been identified as Bablu Kumar of Samrat Colony of Giaspura, and Rahul Kumar and Suman of same locality.
The case was registered following the statement of the mother of the victim. The complainant alleged that Bablu Kumar abducted her 17-year-old daughter on March 22 with the help of the other two. She alleged that Bablu raped her daughter on the pretext of marriage.
ASI Sukhdev Raj of Focal Point police station said the police arrested the trio from Jandiyali and recovered the girl from their possession.
As per police record, in Punjab, a total of 680 rape cases had been reported in 2012 and 479 in 2011. In 2012, the highest number of rape cases were from Ludhiana (69), followed by Patiala (44) and Batala (44).
