The parents of Ludhiana acid attack victim Harpreet Kaur, who were earlier busy preparing for the marriage of their daughter with Harpreet Singh, are now preparing for her funeral.

The family had to face the trauma without any fault of theirs. The former wife of the groom's elder brother orchestrated the attack on the victim who was present at a beauty parlour at Sarabha Nagar in Ludhiana. Police investigations have shown the groom's family to be at fault. The family has been avoiding the victim's family after the attack.

Victim's father Jaswant Singh said his repeated attempts to talk to the groom or his parents had proved futile. Even the middleman for the marriage and the common relatives of the two families had not been taking the phone calls.

A few days earlier when the victim was in a position to speak, she wanted to talk to her fiance. But his parents did not allow that saying the boy was under stress.

Many individuals and organisations had offered help to the family, but to no avail. The victim's father who runs a hair salon from his house said, "She died as we could not afford her treatment." He said nobody came forward for financial help.

An inconsolable Amar Kaur, 70, the victim's maternal grandmother, said, "We want justice. Acid should be thrown on the attackers."

Neighbours of the family have formed the Peedit Harpreet Kaur Insaaf Dilwao Committee, which has demanded financial support to the family as well as government job for the girl's brother.

The victim's father demanded capital punishment for the accused and that the case be shifted to a fast-track court. The family wants to meet the Ludhiana police commissioner through the Barnala SSP for addition of section 302 of the IPC to the case. The family also wants the groom's family to be made a party in the case as the incident resulted due to their internal dispute.

Regularisation policy crashes property rates

With only 17 out of nearly 2,400 unauthorised colonies in Ludhiana regularised for the past more than one year, the real estate sector in the city has taken a nosedive as the property prices in many parts of the city have come down heavily.
