The accused was arrested from a dhaba outside the police commissioner's office. The bureau also arrested the dhaba owner for accepting money on the behalf of ASI Darbara Singh. The head constable, Kanwaljit Singh, who is at large, has also been booked in the case under Prevention of Corruption Act, besides the ASI and dhaba owner.

Jagdish Kaur, a resident of Shimlapuri, had approached the vigilance bureau with a complaint that the police had implicated her son Jaspreet Singh alias Jassi in a false case and head constable Kanwaljit Singh of CIA staff had demanded Rs. 15,000 from her to release her son.

She alleged that she had already paid Rs. 10,000 to the cop, and the remaining amount was decided to be paid on Monday. Therefore, Jagdish reached outside the police headquarters and called head constable Kanwaljit, who told her to hand over the cash to ASI Darbara at "Pandit Da Dhaba" outside the police commissioner's office. She then reached the dhaba and contacted ASI Darbara, who smelled a rat and asked her to handover the money to dhaba owner Surinder Kumar.

As the dhaba owner accepted the cash, the vigilance bureau raided and arrested him red-handed, before arresting ASI Darbara from the dhaba. Vigilance bureau senior superintendent of police (SSP) Satinder Singh said the bureau had launched a manhunt to arrest head constable Kanwaljit.

The CIA staff had arrested a gang of five snatchers on February 4 and claimed to have solved nearly 100 cases of snatchings and loot. Jagdish's son Jaspreet Singh was one of the accused arrested in the case. ASI Darbara was earlier deputed at Sarabha Nagar police station and was transferred to CIA staff around two months back.

This is the third such case in the past two weeks. On January 29, constable Mohammad Sadiq of Dehlon police station was arrested by vigilance bureau for accepting a bribe of Rs. 1 lakh. Earlier, on January 27, ASI Munish Kumar of PSPCL police station was arrested by the bureau for accepting a bribe of `60,000. Another accused cop had managed to flee from the spot.
