Taking note of a recent fire accident in a garment factory here, the Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Undertakings (CICU) has urged the municipal corporation commissioner and mayor to strengthen the fire brigade of the civic body.

"Industry pays heavy taxes as property tax (earlier house tax), fire cess, licence fee, octroi on electricity, still the industry is not given proper attention over any issue, be it the fire brigade or the road conditions and sewerage system," said Upkar Singh Ahuja, joint secretary, CICU.

"If we speak about fire safety management, although fire cess is being charged with property tax, no arrangement is there to control fire and whenever there is an accident, the civic body has to take help from army and air force," CICU stated.

"When a fire breaks out, every minute is important. But, it takes hours for the fire brigade to reach the mishap site, since vehicles are very old and the fire staff is not efficient. Even after fire tenders reach the spot, sometimes the lid of water pipe is jammed and is not able to spray water," Ahuja added.

CICU has urged the government to pay special attention on industrial fire safety.
