The three-day India International Cycle Expo-2013 that kicked-off at Government College for Girls here on Friday is seeing a lot of activity among the traders and the consumers.

But the cycle industry in Ludhiana, which has developed and manufactured new techniques to create modern bicycles, is now facing many problems and the fear of China to eat into its profits also looms.

Though the industry is expecting some relief and benefits from the government in the coming budget session yet the threat of China looms.

The cycle industry with its hub in Ludhiana, contributes 70% to the overall cycle production in India. It also exports bicycle and its parts to foreign counties.

New innovations used in modern-day bicycle's are: disk brakes which are only manufactured by a single cycle unit in Ludhiana, alloy wheel used to give the bicycle a sporty look. The carbon fiber frames used in bicycles to make it light weight so that it becomes easy and comfortable for riders are all manufactured right here in Ludhiana.

Rajesh Kalra, an exporter and CEO of Suncross Bikes says, the industry is expecting a lot from the government in the coming budget session. The industry is demanding reduction of import duties so that the exporters here can assemble hi-end bicycles as per the European standards for exports to the foreign markets where India has lost its share recently.

The government must support the industry wholeheartedly so that India can become a major hub for bicycles and bicycle parts export across the world.
