Congress councillors and other leaders on Sunday said they would not allow the implementation of the property tax that was passed in the Punjab assembly. "They have to change it on the pattern of Harayana where the rate of tax is comparatively low," said Pawan Dewan, District Congress (urban) president.

Congress' demand on Sunday came a day after state chief Pratap Singh Bajwa had asked them to oppose the property tax tooth and nail.

Dewan described the tax as "too unfriendly for the residents of the city".

"The state government's committee should look in to the pro and cons of the property tax, so that it doesn't become a burden on the people," said Dewan.

The councillors had during budget discussions on Saturday demanded that they be allowed to discuss the issue of property tax in the house
