The Congress on Sunday paid homage to former chief minister of Punjab, Beant Singh, who was killed in a terrorist attack on August 31, 1995.

Congress leaders of the district gathered at the party office and said Beant was the one who was instrumental in ending terrorism due to which several persons died.
Party leaders, including Parminder Mehta, Satwinder Jawaddi, Palwinder Singh and Vikram Pahelwan, paid homage to the former leader. They said Punjab did not get such a leader after the death of Beant Singh.

Parminder Mehta said Beant himself went to villages of the state that were infested with terrorism and spoke against those who were involved in bloodshed.
"Beant had delivered the message of peace and brotherhood in nook and corner of the state due to which we were able to see a prosperous Punjab after the end of terrorism" Mehta said.

Senior leader of Congress and former district chief KK Bawa said Beant had shown a path of peace and prosperity to all Punjabis and we should follow the same path, Bawa said.

He said the real homage to Beant Singh would be the end of drug menace and other social evils in the state. Bawa said the Congress had a glorious history of sacrifice during terrorism in Punjab as hundreds of Congressmen were also killed during that period.
