Another cop brings shame to the police department. Mohammad Sadiq, a head constable at Dehlon police station, had allegedly demanded Rs. 1 lakh from a resident of Sayiyan Kalan by threatening him of implicating him in a false case.
When the vigilance bureau sleuths raided his accommodation to catch him red-handed on Monday evening, the accused managed to flee the spot. In the attempt, he dropped Rs. 25,000 on the ground, but managed to take rest of the amount with him.
The vigilance bureau has registered a case against head constable Mohammad Sadiq under the Prevention of Corruption Act. When the police raided his house, it found a knife, besides a cache of drugs, including 1.2 gm of poppy husk, 37 bottles of illicit liquor, 5 litre country-made liquor, 280 sedative pills, 25 bottles of sedative cough syrup and an expensive wrist watch.
The Dehlon police registered another case against the accused under sections 25/54/59 of the Arms Act, 61/1/14 of the Excise Act, 15/61/85 and 22/61/85 of the NDPS act.
Revealing about the matter, SSP economic offence wing of vigilance bureau, Ludhiana, Sandeep Goel said the head constable had illegally confined Sukhdev Singh of Sayiyan Kalan on May 18, following a verbal complaint by the head of a shrine for indulging in a brawl on the issue of car parking.
As other staff and top officials were busy in preparations for the zila parishad and block samiti elections, the head constable confined Singh at the Dehlon police station and threatened him of implicating him in a fake case. He allegedly demanded Rs. 1 lakh as bribe to release him.
Singh, who works as an assistant at drug de-addiction centre in Dehlon, made a complaint to vigilance bureau. A trap was laid and the accused was arrested red-handed.
Singh handed over the bribe to the accused at his residence, which was raided by the vigilance bureau, but he managed to escape through the backdoor, out-witting the vigilance officers. In the attempt Rs. 25,000 dropped from his hand out of Rs. 1 lakh.
The SSP said efforts were on to arrest the accused who was at large.
