Medical students and doctors from various parts of the country participated in the event. They carried banners and placards demanding abolition of nuclear weapons, check on small arms and end to violence of all kinds.

Medical students sporting stethoscopes stood on an X marked in the busy market area of the city and and distributed pamphlets advocating harmony and peace.

The peace march was led by IDPD president Dr LS Chawla, general secretary Dr Arun Mitra and Major General (retired) Vinod Sehgal.

Those who addressed the gathering said peace was essential to development. Dr Chawla said ironically, India and Pakistan, which were ranked poorly in the human development index, were the biggest buyers of arms.

Dr Chawla said that during the upcoming two-day conference, participants would debate on action for changes in government's policy to ensure quality healthcare in the country.
