Renowned special educator and therapist Ruchika Sachdeva conducted the workshop which was attended by students and teachers from the department and parents and representatives from major schools in the city.

Ruchika stressed on the need of early identification of signs of learning disability. This was followed by a discussion on the type of tests available and the required intervention strategies.

Emphasising on the need to have more inclusive education in schools, Ruchika explained the supportive strategies which could be carried out in classrooms.

She lamented the segregation of children with special needs from what people generally perceived to be 'normal students' and said it was an erroneous distinction. "Every child is unique and has special abilities," she said, adding that just because a child was deficit in a particular area, should not make him or her liable to be marked out. Inclusive education helps all children, she further added.

Potentials coordinator Puja Kalra said learning disability was a common problem but not enough was being done in the area. "Being a specialised institution with limited capacity we felt there was a need to raise awareness on the issue," she said.

Earlier, head of department Jatinder Gulati welcomed the guests and emphasised on the need for mainstream schools to come forward to support the education of differently-abled children.

Drishti Public School, Lehragaga, was honoured for their initiative on setting up a first inclusive unit in the region and SEABA International Public School, Lehragaga, in Sangrur district was also recognised for a similar initiative in rural areas.

Among others who participated in the workshop included representatives from KVM, Civil Lines, Bal Bharti Public School, Guru Nanak Public School, BCM School, Shastri Nagar; Harvest International School and DAV Public School, BRS Nagar.
