A police party from Ludhiana on Thursday raided the house of New Delhi resident Amit Kumar, who allegedly bought a newborn boy for Rs. 8 lakh through a deal struck on Facebook.

However, the raid, conducted in Ranjit Singh Nagar locality of the Capital, proved futile. The Ludhiana police have sought the help of their Delhi counterparts to trace the accused.

The other accused - the infant’s maternal grandfather, Feroze Khan; his aide Irfan; an assistant at Ludhiana’s Satyam Hospital, Gurpreet Singh; and nurse Sunita - were produced before the court here on Thursday. The court extended their police remand by two days. They had been arrested by the Basti Jodhewal police on Tuesday.

The police also opened Gurpreet’s Facebook account to ascertain details of the online deal, but to no avail. It is suspected that the accused deleted certain content after the matter was reported in the media.

Local resident Noori, who gave birth to the boy at Satyam Hospital on April 3, had lodged a police complaint against her father and others after the infant went missing. The baby had been reunited with his mother on Tuesday. However, Noori claimed on Wednesday that her father was innocent, adding that Irfan and the others had forced him to sell the child for money.

Infrastructure, professional training need of the hour for sports upliftment

Despite poor infrastructure in their respective sports, three local sportspersons brought glory to the nation by winning medals in the recently concluded Commonwealth Games at Glasgow. This only goes on to show that Ludhiana has tremendous potential to not only represent India but win medals at the international level too.
