Famers demand compensation for paddy damaged in rain

A farmers' body here on Thursday demanded compensation for agriculturists whose paddy crop was damaged due to recent rain in the region. 


The district unit of Kirti Kisan Sabha of Punjab, which is a member of All-India Kisan Federation, issued a press statement in this regard after a meeting at KK Kaushal Memorial Bhavan, Doraha.

The farmers' body also condemned the state government's notification for acquiring 3,245 acres under the provisions of the old Land Acquisition Act of 1894, instead of acquiring it under the latest amended Act of 2013.

The sabha also described the state government's claims of improving the condition of farmers as mere rhetoric. “Prices of fertilisers, pesticides and diesel are increasing every day. Also, farmers have to spend sleepless nights in grain markets due to non-procurement of crops,” the press release issued by the sabha said, adding that the problems would now be discussed in a three-day conference of the All-India Kisan Federation beginning in Chandigarh from October 28.

Kirti Kisan Sabha of Punjab secretary Lakhwinder Singh Bowani, senior leaders Kuldip Singh, Jang Singh Advocate, Amarjit Singh Faizgarh and Sukhdev Singh Kila Raipur attended the meeting.

800 cartons of illicit liquor seized from truck

The Sadar Police seized 800 cartons of illicit liquor, worth `20 lakh, from a truck on Sunday. The driver of the truck, which was heading towards Ajitwal in Moga, failed to produce documents for the liquor, following which the police booked him under section 61/1/14 of the Excise Act.
