Former Youth Akali Dal (YAD) leader and a close aide of state revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia, Maninder Pal Singh Johar alias Sunny Goodwill Johar, 46, died under mysterious circumstances at his residence in Bhai Randhir Singh nagar here in the wee hours on Saturday.

Police suspects Johar has committed suicide by swallowing some poisonous substance.

As per the information provided by the family, Johar has come home on Friday late. In the morning, as his health deteriorated he was rushed to the hospital, where the doctors declared him brought dead.

Dr Ritu Gupta, medical superintendent at the hospital, said Johar was brought to the hospital by some of his friends.

Ludhiana (west) assistant commissioner of police (ACP) RPS Sandhu said the police received the information regarding the incident in the morning.

He informed the body has been sent for autopsy and the police would take any appropriate action only after getting the report.

The ACP also said neither the police has recovered any suicide note nor the kin of the deceased have issued any statement in this context.

Speculations are there that Johar along with his friend and former YAD leader Rishi Banda has gone to Amritsar to attend rally that was held in favour of SAD-BJP candidate Arun Jaitley on Friday.

Both of them have returned from the rally the same night.

Another theory making rounds in the city is that the former YAD leader has left a suicide note in which he has named several persons for abetting his suicide.

Sunny Goodwill was in news for allegedly assaulting assistant inspector General (AIG) SS Mand and his NRI friend Paramjit Singh Passi at his restaurant-cum- bar ‘The Hub’ at Ghumar Mandi on December 2012 following a feud. After the incident the Youth Akali Dal had kept them aside and had claimed that Sunny Johar was dismissed from the party a long ago.

He was lodged in Ludhiana central jail and was later bailed out.

Johar had a shady past and has remained in news in land grabbing cases and for encroaching upon government land.

Regularisation policy crashes property rates

With only 17 out of nearly 2,400 unauthorised colonies in Ludhiana regularised for the past more than one year, the real estate sector in the city has taken a nosedive as the property prices in many parts of the city have come down heavily.
