Foul smell from a garbage dump outside state government’s ambitious Senior Secondary Residential School for Meritorious Students welcomes parents, students and staff.

Even as students and parents have been visiting the school for admissions for the past several days, the municipal corporation (MC) has turned a blind eye to the garbage strewn outside the school as the bin stationed there is covered.

If the situation persists, students, who will attend classes at the school from August 4 when the academic session starts, are in for inconvenience.

Besides, the school’s mess is located not too far from the garbage dump.

A parent, Sangeeta Sharma, said, “I visited the school two days ago for my daughter’s counselling, and saw garbage collected right outside the school premises. It is disappointing to see garbage lying outside a newly built school where hundreds of students will study and reside.”

A student, who wished not to be named, said, “Though the school building is admirable, the garbage dump right outside is saddening. When I decided to visit the girls’ hostel, I had to pass by the dump where it is even difficult to breathe due to the extreme foul smell. Besides, flies were sitting on garbage heaps and will spread diseases.”

When contacted, Paramjit Kaur Chahal, district education officer, secondary, said, “I am aware about the garbage dump. It needs to be removed as students will pass by it every day when they visit the school. I will take this matter up with the higher authorities.”
