The mob comprising of shopkeepers and members of a local NGO alleged the health officials of having taken bribe of Rs. 9800 from the owner of a mobile shop near Jagraon Railway crossing.

The team of health officials included Dr Avinash Kumar DHO Ludhiana,  food safety officers Manoj Khosla and Harpreet Kaur. Sensing danger,  the health officials immediately called the concerned police station. DSP Jagraon Surinder Kumar said that no case has been registered as yet as they did not recover anything from the officials. However, the matter is under investigation.

On the other hand, sources revealed that the said team reached Sidhwan Bet 20 kilometers from Ludhiana at 11.30 and took samples of tea, khoya, barfi, pasta from various outlets. Thereafter, the team moved to Jagraon and too samples from a dairy, flour mill and dal mill at around 3.45.

Requesting anonimity, a local merchant alleged  the officials of having taken money from the above outlets.

However, food safety officer Manoj Khosla refuted the allegations adding that it was a conspiracy of the tobacco sellers to jeopardise the drive. "The DHO having inspected the mobile shop had taken gutka packs for sampling and warned him against the practice.

In order to save himself the mobile store owner cooked up the whole story and we had hardly moved 100 meters after the railway crossing opened that a mob stopped our vehicle and surrounded us, " Khosla added.
