Visiting for haircut, a girl, 10, was raped in a barber's shop on Friday evening on the Noorwala road here.

After the incident, the accused barber fled but agitated people from the neighbourhood vandalised his shop. The Basti Jodhewal police have lodged the first-information report (FIR) against the barber, Prince, on the statement of the victim's mother, who had brought the child to the salon and left her there to go grocery shopping.

When she got back to pick her up, the barber told him the child had left a few minutes ago. The mother returned to the market when she didn't find the child even at home.

Then she noticed people huddled at the shop and got to know from them they had head the cries of a girl from inside. It was then that the accused fled and the victim turned out to be none other than the woman's daughter, who told her the man that threatened her after the crime.

People vandalised the shop in rage and the police got there later to pacify them. Assistant sub-inspector Bhupinder Singh from the Basti Jodhewal at police station said a hunt for the accused was on.
