With the Congress naming Ravneet Bittu as the Lok Sabha candidate from Ludhiana, the four-cornered contest from this seat has all Sikh candidates. Celebrations in the Congress camp in Ludhiana on Tuesday after Ravneet Bittu was declared Lok Sabha candidate from the constituency.
It was being contemplated that there would be division of votes between SAD candidate Manpreet Singh Ayali, AAP candidate Harvinder Singh Phoolka, independent heavyweight Simarjit Singh Bains and the Congress after fielding a Hindu face would gain.
The Congress also choosing a Sikh candidate has evoked a mixed reaction in Ludhiana. There were celebrations by Congress workers and leaders after the candidate was announced. The Ludhiana skies were lit by firecrackers and sweets were distributed in various Congress camps.
Amarjit Singh Tikka, a close aide of late chief minister Beant Singh, welcomed the decision, saying, “Bittu is the right choice as he is the grandson of late Beant Singh who laid down his life to restore peace in Punjab.
He and his family looked upon Hindus and Sikhs as one.”
Former district Congress president Krishan Kumar Bawa said, “There couldn’t have been a better option as Bittu is the grandson of a martyr. We will extend all support to ensure his win.”
The workers are eagerly waiting for him to come to Ludhiana so that they can commence the campaign. The party cadres were in low spirits since sitting MP Manish Tewari opted out of the contest.
Bittu’s candidature has infused a new life into the workers and leaders who are already convening meetings to draw a foolproof strategy against their rivals.
