Man booked for polygamy after wife turns down dowry demand

The local police have booked a resident of Libra village for allegedly solemnising his second marriage without divorcing his first wife after she refused to fulfil his dowry demand.


In her complaint, Inderjit Kaur of Ramgarh village, submitted that she married Karamjit Singh around six years ago. She alleged that after sometime of marriage, her husband and his kin started harassing her for dowry. She alleged that recently Karamjit started pressurising her to bring `5 lakh in cash from her parents.

Harassed by her husband and in-laws, she started living with her parents in Ramgarh village.

Meanwhile, she came to know that her husband had solemnised a second marriage with Gurmeet Kaur of Ubhwal village, without divorcing her.

Following the complaint of the woman, the Sahnewal police booked Karamjit Singh, his mother Jasmel Kaur, sisters Paramjit Kaur and Balwinder Kaur and relatives Jarnail Singh, Dilbagh Singh and Gurmeet Kaur under sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 494 (Marrying again during lifetime of husband or wife) and 498-A (husband or relative of husband subjecting woman to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code.

Sub-inspector Rajwant Kaur of Sahnewal police station, said the police had launched a manhunt to arrest the accused.

800 cartons of illicit liquor seized from truck

The Sadar Police seized 800 cartons of illicit liquor, worth `20 lakh, from a truck on Sunday. The driver of the truck, which was heading towards Ajitwal in Moga, failed to produce documents for the liquor, following which the police booked him under section 61/1/14 of the Excise Act.
