Man held for duping people on pretext of sending them abroad

The Shimlapuri police have arrested a resident of New Janta Nagar for allegedly duping 19 people of a total of Rs. 59 lakh on the pretext of sending them abroad.


The accused, Sukhwant Singh alias Baba, had been declared proclaimed offender by the local court. He was arrested from Shimlapuri area following a tip-off on Tuesday.

His son, Harpreet Singh alias Raju, and daughter Jasmeet Kaur alias Kimmi, co-accused in the cases were also arrested, but later released on bail.

His brother-in-law, Surinder Singh alias Bunty, had also been declared a proclaimed offender. But he is at large.

Giving details, inspector Jaswinder Singh, SHO, Shimlapuri police station, said a case was registered against the accused and his aides on July 23, 2011, under sections 420 and 120-B.

At least 19 complainants have approached the police against the accused alleging that he took Rs. 3.10 lakh from each of them on the pretext of sending them abroad and also providing free IELTS training. However, he neither fulfilled his part of the deal, nor returned the money.

The inspector said the police on Tuesday produced the accused before the court from where he was remanded to two-day police custody. He said efforts were on to arrest Surinder Singh alias Bunty.
