On one hand, 20 posts of junior engineer, out of a total of 22, are still vacant, while on the other, the municipal corporation has proposed to get 54 more posts sanctioned in the recently-held budget session.
Interestingly, there are a total of 26 posts of engineers at various levels lying vacant in the MC and a demand for creation of 74 new posts has been made during the budget session held on March 16.
All the posts belong to the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) cell that looks after the sewerage, water supply and tubewell maintenance among others. With such a large number of posts lying vacant, it has raised serious questions over the working of the MC that wanted 74 new posts for engineers in the O&M cell.
According to official documents, there are only two JEs looking after the O&M cell that makes the laidback attitude of the O&M cell clear.
Two engineers look after a large area that makes it impossible for them to take care of the entire city, as a result the problems relating to sewerage and water supply take a long time to get solved.
The chief engineer's post in MC is also lying vacant. There is only one post sanctioned for the chief engineer, but the MC has failed to fill it.
During the house meeting that was held on March 12, a large number of councillors had raised questions over the basic amenities, including water supply and sewerage.
According to the official documents, there is one post sanctioned for superintendent engineer (SE) that has not been filled. The MC has also demanded two more posts for SE. A total of six sanctioned posts for XEN are filled and there has been no demand for the same in the budget.
The MC has demanded 18 new posts for assistant engineers. Four out of a total of 12 posts have been filled at present. A total of 54 posts more have been demanded for junior engineer, whereas 20 posts are lying vacant out the total 22.
Kamlesh Bansal, additional commissioner, O&M wing, said, “A total of 54 JE posts have been demanded for the 18 sub-divisions of the MC. There are a total of 10 SDO posts, out of which two have not been filled so far.”
