The municipal corporation of Ludhiana will soon form a policy wherein it will identify special zones for street vendors who often cause traffic snarls in the city.

The MC has already formed a list of zones that have a number of street vendors and it will be discussed with the rehri phari federation of Ludhiana. There will be more than 10 vending zones in each of the four zones of the MC.

MC commissioner RK Verma said the policy to make special vending zones for carts in the city was underway after which there would be no traffic problem.

He said there was a need for these special zones in the city as carts lead to traffic jams in most of the areas in the city.

If the policy is implemented soon, it will give easy access to residents for street food with proper parking areas and also a licence to street vendors for their carts.

Ranjit Abhigyan, programme manager of National Association of Street Vendors of India (NASVI), said they demanded special zones in all cities of the country.

"We had discussions with the MC commissioner as well as the mayor last month in which they agreed to the demands of the association," Abhigyan, who is incharge of Punjab NASVI, said.

He said the MC had also asked them to form a list of zones so that things could be made clear.

"They (MC) have formed a list of areas in each of the four zones and we will also submit a list. Following which appropriate areas will be selected," Abhigyan said.

Earlier, the members of rehri phari federation of Ludhiana had also met the then MC commissioner MS Jaggi and apprised him of the situation. Jaggi had promised the association that he would soon form exclusive vending zones but after his unceremonious suspension from the MC the matter got delayed.

The federation had demanded 100 vending zones across the city in which carts of different goods would be parked.
