The Ludhiana municipal corporation (MC) does not seem to bow before any pressure now. Feroze Gandhi market that has been surrounded in controversies for housing several illegal buildings will now face severe action by the corporation. The MC plans to seal illegal floors of these buildings next week.

The Ludhiana Improvement Trust (LIT) that set up the market long back had laid norms that no shop-cum-office could raise the height of building beyond the prescribed height by the government.

However, there are a number of buildings that have raised the height beyond the prescribed limits.
The MC would seal illegal floors of 14 buildings at the Feroze Gandhi Market anytime next week.

General secretary, Council of RTI Activists, Arvind Sharma had filed an RTI asking the corporation as to why no action was being taken against the illegal structures at Feroze Gandhi market.

"However they did not reply to me before I filed an appeal. They later told me that they were not aware of what action should be taken," Sharma said.

The market faces parking problems throughout the day and has also remained in controversy over the parking issues.

With these illegal floors being constructed, the number of commercial establishments has gone up, which has further raised the number of officials working in these offices, thus leading to increase in number of vehicles.

Many buildings in the market are considered to be of close associates of political leaders which makes the MC think twice before taking any action.

Recently, mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria had asked the officials of the building branch that action should be taken against all who have violated the norms.

Commissioner RK verma is also serious in removing the menace of illegal buildings in the city as a result he has also given a go ahead to the officials to take action against these structures at Feroze Gandhi market.

Council of RTI Activists' president Rohit Sabharwal had complained four times to the secretary of local bodies after which the civic body decided to take action against these structures.

Assistant town planner (zone D) Surinder Bindra said action would be taken against buildings that had raised floors more than the prescribed height.

"We have informed the Punjab and Haryana high court regarding the action that will be taken next week," Bindra said.
