Taking strict action against the illegal parking in front of vacant plots being used for selling street food, the tehbazari wing of the municipal corporation towed away vehicles from one such plot on the Mall Road.
A team of tehbazari wing led by superintendent Jasdev Singh Sekhon arrived at the spot on Monday and started towing away vehicles parked on roadside. “No arrangement has been made by the plot owners to park vehicles as a result this is resulting in traffic chaos. I have taken action against the illegal parking in front of the vacant plot as per the rules,” said Sekhon.
Eateries running from make-shift structures set up on vacant plots are doing brisk business in Ghumar Mandi, Mall Road, Hambran Road and Badi Haibowal.
So far the civic body has not taken any action against these eateries, despite the fact that these are running without the corporation's permission. Each eatery at these vacant plots is paying as high a rent as `18000 per month.
The health wing has till now failed to take action against the eateries.
District Health Officer (DHO) Avinash Kumar said that so far no inspection had been conducted at the eateries. “Due to shortage of time and lack of staff, no inspections has been conducted so far,” said Kumar.
Monika Anand, assistant town planner of Zone B, said that it has to be seen whether there was any building by-law violation as there was no building. “However safety of people is under question, as these eateries must have been using LPG cylinders that could lead to accident,” she said.
