When Patiala's Navneet Kaur Dhillon was crowned Femina Miss India 2013 in Mumbai on Sunday night, the students of International Institute of Fashion Design, Ludhiana, had a special reason to cheer about.

This is because the Punjabi model, who is the centre of all eyes today, worked with the institute's students closely last year. Navneet had modelled for a collection created by the second year students of fashion design degree course that was eventually sent to the jury of Lakme Fashion Week, Mumbai.

"We are thrilled as the model we worked with went on to win the big honour. We are also surprised with the achievement as nobody imagined she would jump to such height in a year only," said Tarvinder Singh, a third year student of the course.

Recalling the experience, another student Preeti Kakkar said, "It was in March that we did a photo shoot of the collection to be sent for the grand fashion show. As some of our garments, which were despite being Western in cuts, revolved around Punjab's traditional arts such as Phulkari, we were glad to have a Punjabi model which is not always the case."

The photo shoot was done in Ludhiana with Navneet modelling for around eight garments. "She was very professional, confident and carried off the collection with elegance," added Manpreet Kaur, also one of the students who worked on the collection.

Sukhpreet Kaur, another student, said, "Some of us had predicted that Navneet had the capability to shine on international ramp."

While the institute looks forward to her stint with global platform now, there is a wave of cheer and confidence among it students. "It's a high. We are very motivated today," added Sukhpreet.
