On the one hand, municipal corporation is busy in taking action against encroachments in different areas of the city, on the other hand, police have failed in keeping a check on those who encroach upon government land.

The anti-encroachment drive of the MC started nearly two months ago, wherein the officials acted tough against all types of encroachments across the city.

Naveen Malhotra, who is the superintendent of the tehbazari wing of the MC which takes action against encroachment, and inspector Vijay Kalra of the same wing are in the forefront to take action against encroachers.

However, the MC is facing a problem as the police, who are also required to take action against encroachers, are not "coming to the help of the corporation".

The Punjab and Haryana high court has asked the MC to report all encroachments to the district police.

According to the HC orders, within 24 hours of the receipt of information, the police authorities shall take immediate action in the matter in accordance with law.

Malhotra said the police department was not keeping a check on the encroachments despite it being informed regularly by the MC.

"We inform the police about every encroachment so that they could keep a check on it after we remove it. However, the police are of no help in keeping the check," he said.

Malhotra along with Kalra on the directions of mayor Harcharan Singh Gohalwaria and commissioner RK Verma have started an anti-encroachment drive, especially in those areas where it effects the residents of the city.

The MC had sometime ago also shot off a letter to the police commissioner asking him that action be taken against encroachments which were causing a problem for the residents.

Even the mayor had led an anti-encroachment drive in which he visited spots along with the MC team and guided them in removing encroachments.

Though in some cases the police department provided the MC with personnel, it did not assure that the encroachment would not take place in the same area again.

However, police commissioner Ishwar Singh said, "The police take action against encroachments by providing force to the MC whenever required."
