Insisting on immediate shifting of the malkhana from the new court complex, lawyers staged a protest at the mini-secretariat here on Monday.

The lawyers alleged that though the deputy commissioner had issued orders to shift the malkhana to Industrial Area-A, the order had not been implemented yet.

Following the protest, police commissioner Nirmal Singh Dhillon and deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Harsh Kumar Bansal reached the spot and got the vehicles stored at the malkhana shifted. Following the police action, the lawyers called off their stir.

The lawyers have been staging protests at the mini-secretariat for the last one week, demanding that the malkhana be shifted.
In response, deputy commissioner Rajat Agarwal on Sunday had issued orders to shift the malkhana.

District Bar Association general secretary Rustam Pal Singh said the lawyers were facing problems in parking their vehicles due to vehicles and other articles dumped at the malkhana. He alleged that the court had ordered that the malkhana be shifted from the new court complex in 2006, but the district administration had paid no heed.

Senior advocate Harish Narang said the malkhana had occupied 1.5 acre at the new court complex, and with its shifting, lawyers and other people would get adequate space to park their vehicles.

Dhillon said he had started his career as a lawyer from Ludhiana before joining the police force, and would support the lawyers.
