Nearly 150 members of Punjab Driver Technical Union and Rashtriya Safai Mazdoor Congress gathered outside the Zone A office of the municipal corporation (MC) here to demand a job for the family of a former MC driver who breathed his last on Tuesday.

The family of former MC driver Darshan Lal - whose services had been terminated in 2010 after a girl was killed in an accident with the truck being driven by him - were also part of the protest and kept Lal's body at the protest site.

The family - including Lal's wife, four daughters and a son - said that Lal had gone into depression after he had lost his job in 2010. Lal had joined the MC as a driver in 1994. In the accident in March 2010, a girl was killed, while another sustained serious injuries.

While the family and union leaders demanded a job, MC claimed that they could not offer a permanent job to the family members of Lal since he was no more an employee of the MC.

Punjab chief of Rashtriya Safai Mazdoor Congress, Hansraj Gangt, warned of striking work if the family's demand was not met by Thursday. "If this does not happen, the MC sweepers will also join us. There will be no movement of A2Z garbage-lifting vehicles. We are giving a two-day notice to the MC," he said.

Amarjit Singh Sekhon, joint commissioner and chief of health and sanitation wing, said that as the driver was terminated from the duty, a member of his family could not be provided a job against his vacancy. "However, on compassionate grounds, we offered another job to the family, but they refused. We cannot provide a technical job to them as it requires certain educational qualification."
