Clerical staff of the civil surgeon's office here continued their strike for the seventh consecutive day on Tuesday.

Demanding higher salaries, promotions and recruitment of staff, the employees sat on a dharna at the civil surgeon's office on Hambran Road and raised slogans against the state government, and health and family welfare department. The workers' action again affected public services.

Sukhwinder Singh, president of Punjab Health Department Subordinate Offices' Clerical Association, said, “We continued our strike as the higher authorities have not responded to our demands, though the same were accepted in 2011 by the then health minister Satpal Gosain.”

“A meeting with principal secretary Vini Mahajan was held in July this year. We were assured that our demands, which have been accepted, would be implemented. But no step has been taken so far. We will continue our strike until the demands are not met,” he said.

The association is demanding better pays and recruitments of superintendents, stenographers, senior assistants and clerks. It is also demanding promotions for employees, including accountants, junior statistical assistants and others. Civil surgeon Dr Subhash Batta said efforts were on to ensure a meeting with higher authorities.

Vini Mahajan, the principal secretary of the state's health and family welfare department, was not available for comment. She was busy in a meeting and advised this correspondent to talk to the director of health services.

Despite several attempts, Dr HS Bali, the director of health services, did not respond to phone calls by HT.
