In a recent visit to Ludhiana and Jalalabad, a three-member delegation from Lahore held discussions with deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal and Ludhiana municipal commissioner RK Verma among other officials.

Badal expressed his wish to set up a solid waste management company that would look after the solid waste management in the state that has become one of the biggest issues for the residents of all the cities of the state.

Ludhiana being one of the most polluted and infested with solid waste, RK Verma has been asked by the deputy chief minister as to what could be done for the formation of the company.

“The meeting that was held with the three-member delegation at Jalalabad was fruitful in which they told the Ludhiana MC officials and Badal that there was a great scope of such a company in Punjab that would look over solid waste management,” said a senior official of the MC.

The official who was also present during the meeting said that the members of the delegation appraised the deputy chief minister that such a company would be helpful in removing the menace of solid waste in the state.

Wasim Azmal Choudhary, a senior administrative officer who headed the delegation, had said during his visit to Ludhiana that there was a lot of scope of improvement in the waste management in Ludhiana. “There is a need for sanitation not only in a particular area but it should be trans-border because diseases related to sanitation do not see borders,” he had said.

Highly-placed sources say that RK Verma, being based in Ludhiana, would also supervise the company that would be formed after consultation of different departments, besides financial feasibility.

A managing director (MD) of the company would also be appointed.

Choudhary, during his visit, had also told the MC officials that “the private company, A2Z Waste Management Ltd, that lifts garbage from the city, is not doing the work satisfactorily as it requires more containers for garbage”.

He had also said that there was also a need of more mechanised system that should be adopted by the company.

RK Verma, along with other officials of civic bodies of the state, had also visited Lahore last month to take a stock of the Lahore Waste Management Company that has further hired Turkish contractors who use their own machinery and men to clean the city.
