In yet another daring case, unidentified miscreants allegedly strangulated a retired municipal corporation employee and decamped with 150gm gold jewellery and Rs. 10,000 in cash from his house in New Kundanpuri area on Friday.

The Division Number 4 police have initiated investigation and rounded up some persons for questioning. The police suspect some acquaintance of the family behind the incident.

The victim has been identified as Ramesh Kumar (65). He had retired as a driver from the municipal corporation.

According to police, Kumar was alone at home when the robbers struck. His wife, Kamlesh, had gone out. Kumar's son, Amarjit, lives in a separate accommodation in the area.

In her complaint to the police, Kamlesh said she had left the house at 8.30am. When she returned around 11:30 am, she was aghast to find her house ransacked and her husband lying unconscious on the bed.

She said her husband's hands were tied on the back, and a muffler was wrapped around his neck.

She sounded her son Amarjit, who rushed Kumar to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where the doctors declared him brought dead.

According to inspector Vinod Kumar, station house officer (SHO), Division Number 4 police station, two tenants living on the first floor of Kumar's house were questioned. “The tenants claimed that they did not notice anything untoward, until Kamlesh raised an alarm,” he added.

The family has also rented out the front portion of the house to a woman, Vimla, who runs a Public Call Office (PCO) shop from there.

A door of the shop opens towards the house. Vimla also told the police that she did not see anyone coming or going out from the house.

Additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP) Nilambari Jagdale said Kumar was a heart patient, besides being an asthmatic.

The police have registered a case under Section 302 of the IPC against unidentified persons. “More sections would be added after investigation,” the ADCP added.

This is the second robbery incident in the area in the past three days. On Wednesday, eight miscreants had looted Rs. 3 lakh and a scooter from the manager of Dewan Gas Agency at Deep Nagar area. The police are still struggling to find clues about the robbers.
