Ludhiana resident Baljinder Kaur, who claims to be the real sister of murdered Indian prisoner Sarabjit Singh, has decided to approach the court for subjecting his purported sister Dalbir Kaur to a DNA test.

"I am Sarabjit's sister. I would fight for the family's rights and honour at every platform. First, I am moving court to demand a DNA test of all parties involved," said Baljinder. She was here to meet Ashok Mahindra, an activist of the Dalit Human Rights Organisation for Justice (DHROJ). Mahindra said his organisation would support Baljinder to the hilt.

"My brother is a hero. All these years, we were awaiting his release. We deserved at least to be associated with him after his death, but that too has not been allowed by certain groups," Baljinder added.

She said, "Dalbir was only the face of the struggle for Sarabjit's release. She was the leader of our campaign, but it does not allow her to discredit me as Sarabjit's sister."

When asked about Dalbir's allegations that she was only after money, Baljinder said, "If I was doing all this for money, I would have done it 10 years ago. Money was pouring in for Dalbir and Sarabjit's wife Sukhpreet Kaur even before 2000. I used to maintain their accounts, even as both often fought over division of the money. I used to pacify them so that the campaign for Sarabjit's release was not affected."

On her brother Charanjit Singh's opposition to her stand, Baljinder said, "It is part of Dalbir's conspiracy. Charanjit was in touch with Dalbir after 2010 as she had snapped ties with all other members of our family."

"She took away Sarabjit's documents and photographs from us. My parents didn't doubt her intentions. Now I want all these things back," she said.

"Soon, we are going to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi to bring Sarabjit's belongings back from Pakistan and hand these over to Baljinder," said Mahindra.

Sarabjit had died in a Lahore hospital in May after being assaulted by fellow inmates in Kot Lakhpat jail.
