‘Sorcerer’ accused of raping Amritsar woman in Ludhiana

A ‘sorcerer’ allegedly raped a woman from Amritsar on the pretext of solving problems in her life with his “divine powers” and threatened her with dire consequences after committing the crime.

The Sahnewal police registered a case of rape against the sorcerer, identified as Karamjit Rana alias ‘Punjabi Baba’ of Kohara Chowk, Sahnewal, after the victim lodged a complaint on helpline number 181.

The victim, a resident of Tarn Taran Road, Amritsar, told the police that miffed over her husband’s drinking habit after which he would start quarrelling, she was living separately from him.

She said she saw an advertisement of ‘Punjabi Baba’ on a TV channel 25 days ago, in which he claimed to solve every problem of life with his “divine” remedies. After she contacted the sorcerer over phone, he asked her to come to Kohara Chowk in Ludhiana.

On July 14, she met the accused in Ludhiana and he took her to a house. The accused raped her and threatened her to keep quiet, the victim claimed.

She returned after lodging a complaint at helpline number 181 on July 15.

Inspector Anil Kumar, SHO at Sahnewal police station, said after recording the victim’s statement, they registered a case of rape on Thursday. A hunt has been launched to nab the accused.

Dengue rampant in citywith three more cases

Three more dengue cases were confirmed in the city on Tuesday, taking the total number of cases in state to 20. Three patients, a 40-year-male from Haibowal Kalan, admitted to Dayanand Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), a 42-year-old female from Laddowal admitted to Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) and a 60-year-old male from Ferozepur, admitted to the DMCH, were tested positive for dengue fever.
