Ludhiana municipal corporation on Saturday used a different strategy to remove encroachments from the much-congested Ghumar mandi area of the city. Pictures of encroachments were clicked in the morning before starting the drive in the area.

The team of Tehbazari wing of Zone D led by superintendent Jasdev Sekhon visited the spot on Saturday afternoon and issued 50 challans to the shopkeepers who had encroached upon the road.

Ghumar Mandi is one of the most visited markets famous for clothing and other items that results to traffic snarls throughout the day.

Earlier, whenever the anti-encroachment drive was held in the market, the shopkeepers used to remove temporary encroachments, as a result of which the Tehbazari team could not find any encroachments.

Sekhon said, “This time we clicked the pictures, so that no shopkeeper can refuse that they have not encroached upon the government land.”

Lohri is round the corner and the articles displayed by the shopkeepers on the roads make it difficult for the commuters to drive and Ghumar Mandi has become too congested for residents too.

Tehbazari also warned the shopkeepers that cases would be registered against the offenders in future.
