Elevation of Member of Parliament from Ludhiana Manish Tewari as the union minister of information and broadcasting has not only brought cheers among Congress workers but also resulted in changing of equation in the district Congress.

MP Tewari was recently appointed as a minister in the union cabinet after a reshuffle in the central government.

Several Congress workers and supporters of Tewari from the city are busy bracing themselves up for the mega rally of the UPA government on November 4 in the favour of foreign direct investment (FDI).

Workers from the city are all geared up to take part in the rally, especially after their leader was made a minister.

Factionalism-riddled Ludhiana Congress also sees a hope in Tewari to make the party stronger in the district. It has been more than a month and the party has not been able to finalise the name of the leader of opposition in the MC due to factionalism. Leaders were not able to decide on one name as different factions support different names.

President of district Congress (urban) Pawan Dewan, who is considered to be a close associate of Tewari, has also gained importance in the party after his elevation.

Ludhiana has a series of pending works that are supposed to be completed by the central government. Among them is the cleaning of Buddha Nullah which has become a major cause of irritation among the residents of the city. Computerisation of post offices is another pending work on the list.

"Buddha Nullah has become a source of trouble for the city residents and has caused diseases in many areas from where the nullah flows," Tewari had said in a statement few months ago when he was in the city.

However, Pawan Dewan said Tewari becoming the minister of information and broadcasting had given a boost to the party cadre in Ludhiana who were demoralised after the defeat of the party in assembly and municipal corporation elections earlier this year.

He added that this was for the first time that a Member Parliament from Ludhiana had been made a union minister with independent charge.

"Workers and all block presidents of the district are prepared to take part in the rally on November 4 at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi in the favour of the FDI," Dewan said.
