The accused, who were three in number, besides taking away the Toyota Fortuner, also kidnapped the servant, who was sitting in the vehicle's backseat; but released him some 3km away.

In his complaint, Chamkaur Singh, resident of Baba Nand Singh Nagar, said his wife, along with their servant Surinder, took his Toyota Fortuner to the market.

Once there, the servant remained in the car, while his wife stepped out to go to a shop, leaving the car keys in the ignition and the driver-side window open.

Meanwhile, three miscreants entered the car forcibly and sped away in it, with Surinder was still seated in the rear seat. They later threw him out of the moving car.

Following Singh's complaint, the police registered a case under sections 379 (theft), 365 (kidnapping) and 34 (criminal act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Surinder was also taken to the police station where he recorded his statement.

Dugri station house officer (SHO) Satwant Singh said the accused fled away with the vehicle when they saw the keys of the car inside and the window open. Efforts were on to trace the accused, he added Satwant Singh.
