A case of rape was reported from the city. A man working as a waiter in a restaurant raped a 45-year-old mentally retarded woman at his house in EWS Colony on Sunday.

After conducting a medical examination, the police of Division No. 7 have registered a case against the accused, Taranjit Singh, 40, a resident of EWS Colony.

Interestingly, the case was registered following an anonymous call received at the Police Control Room. Someone from the area sounded the police about the screams of a woman coming out from the house.

Inspector Raj Kumar, SHO of Division No. 7 police station, said, "After getting a message from the Police Control Room we immediately rushed to the area. We heard the screams of a woman from a house and knocked the door. When the accused opened the door, we found a mentally retarded woman in the room."

"Without wasting any time we nabbed the accused and took the woman to the civil hospital for medical examination. In the medical report, the doctors confirmed rape. We have filed a complaint against the accused and arrested him," the SHO said.

The accused lives alone in his house as his wife left him a few years ago.

According to the SHO, the victim only speaks her name and name of her father, but she does not know about her address. The police toiled hard to find about her kin but to no avail. The police would produce the victim before the court and would request the court to send her to Nari Niketan.

The SHO said it was a good sign that the people were showing concern about such issues. If some unidentified man had not informed the police in time, the matter would have never come to the fore.

With only 17 out of nearly 2,400 unauthorised colonies in Ludhiana regularised for the past more than one year, the real estate sector in the city has taken a nosedive as the property prices in many parts of the city have come down heavily.
