Even as messages paying tribute to Shaheed Udham Singh were abound on various social networking websites and mobiles messaging applications to mark his martyrdom day on Thursday, freedom fighters yearn for youth to take inspiration from martyrs, who laid their lives in the Indian independence struggle.

Freedom fighters feel that not many youngsters are aware of the fight these martyrs put up and the extent of sacrifices they made to attain the country’s freedom.

Ninety two-year-old Hazara Singh, who retired as head of department of languages, culture and journalism, PAU, said, “No one cares about these martyrs, who gave up their lives for independence. Soul of the nation is dead. Stories of these martyrs should be printed in school textbooks, so that students are aware about the martyrs’ sacrifices, and can take inspiration from them.”

A freedom fighter, Singh is a resident of Udham Singh Nagar where, he feels, most residents are not even aware about Shaheed Udham Singh. The residents celebrate festivals where they get together for enjoyment, but fail to remember the martyr even on his martyrdom day, even as government offices were closed on the occasion, Singh added.

Dr Narotam Dewan, son of freedom fighter Dewan Jagdish Chandra, said, “The government needs to create more awareness about the martyrs. Youth often regard sportspersons and movie stars as their role models, while totally forgetting martyrs. They should take motivation from the martyr’s sacrifices as well and become
responsible citizens.”

Meanwhile, while government offices remained closed on account of the martyrdom day, neither the district administration nor any political leader paid tribute to the martyr.
