Machhiwara woman succumbs to burns

A woman, who was set on fire by her brother-in-law (sister’s husband) over some property issue in Machhiwara on June 22, succumbed to her injuries on Monday night. She was admitted at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, where died after struggling for life for the past eight days.

A woman, who was set on fire by her brother-in-law (sister’s husband) over some property issue in Machhiwara on June 22, succumbed to her injuries on Monday night. She was admitted at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, where died after struggling for life for the past eight days.

The police have added the section of murder in the FIR lodged against the accused after the death of the woman. The accused are Lachhman Singh of Rajgarh; Amarjit Singh alias Vicky of Dhakka Colony; Jagtar Singh, Gurmukh Singh alias Bhola of Chakli Manga; Hardeep Kaur, Ram Singh of Rajgarh; and an unidentified accused.

The police have arrested Gurmukh Singh and Amarjit Singh, while other accused are at large.

In her statement recorded before her death, Sukhjeet Kaur had alleged that she had purchased a house in Dhaka Colony from her brother-in-law Gurmukh for ? 1.5 lakh. Later, the accused started pressurising her to vacate the house.

On June 22, Gurmukh along with his relatives tried to grab the house. When she resented, they poured diesel on her and set her on fire and fled.

She was rushed to the PGIMER.

After conducting a postmortem examination, the police handed over the body to the family of the deceased on Tuesday.

Deceased’s husband Pardeep Singh demanded the arrest all accused.
