Only the caretaker of the adjoining reading room thought of garlanding the statue as a mark of respect. Congress leaders also give it a miss.

The statue was inaugurated by former chief minister Gopi Chand Bhargav in 1955. The statue and the adjoining reading room were the result of the efforts of freedom fighter and former municipal committee president Salig Ram Prashar.

No politician or government official visit the memorial to garland the statue either on the Mahatma’s birth anniversary or on the martyrdom day.

The municipal authorities take care of the reading room but not the statue. A martyrs’ memorial constructed by the municipal council (MC) outside the complex is also gathering dust.
The MC rather invited criticism for erecting toilets inside the complex just a few yards from the statue.
