The district police, on Wednesday, claimed to have arrested the alleged main accused in the notorious gangster Sukha Kahlon murder case, Gurpreet Singh Sekhon, 26, who had been at large since the crime was committed and taking refuge in neighboring states.

Sukhbir Singh Kahlwan, alias Sukha Kahlon, was gunned down by at least 15 unidentified assailants - who even filmed the act and danced around the body in front of the policemen - in Phagwara on January 22 when six cops were taking him back to the Nabha jail in a jeep after a court hearing in Jalandhar.

The assailants, reportedly belonging to a rival gang, in two white Toyota Fortuner SUVs intercepted the police vehicle outside a private school in full public view on the GT Road around 4.30pm. With their faces covered, they got the policemen and another prisoner to get off before pumping around 20 bullets into Kahlwan's body; and drove away without harming the cops or the other prisoner.

"The accused was arrested from near Chand Baja village at a naka put up by the police while his accomplice, who has been identified as Manvir Singh alias Mani, succeeded in escaping from the spot," said Paramraj Singh Umranangal, inspector, Bathinda zone, at a press conference here.

The police claimed that it had confiscated the Scorpio car he was travelling in besides a .9 mm loaded pistol from his possession.

Sekhon belongs to a very rich family of Mudki in Ferozepur district and has also some brick kilns. A spoilt brat, according to the police, he wanted to establish his supremacy over other rival gangs by plotting the killing of Sukha Kahlwan. The accused has also done the course of flight stewardship.

His crime graph starts with an FIR registered against him in 2007 under the arms Act and attempted murder case at the city police station, Moga, and till now, he has about 13 cases registered against him including four cases of attempted murder and one murder, which was registered at Dyalipura police station of Bathinda district in 2013.

"During investigation, he has disclosed to the police that some of his accomplices, namely Tirath Dhilwan, Rammy Masaana, Neeta Deol, Aslam, Prema Lahoria and Vicky Gounder came to his village where he hatched the plot to eliminate Sukha Kahlwan and worked out the modus operandi to kill him," the IG claimed.

"Gurpreet Sekhon is an infamous gangster and our police teams had been tracking him for about four days. He was first traced in Rajasthan and, through Haryana, he finally reached Punjab. His name had cropped up as the main accused in the Sukha Kahlwan case during investigation in the case," said Charanjeet Singh, senior superintendent of police (SSP) Farikdot.
