Congress leaders from Majithia assembly segment of Amritsar Lok sabha constituency ridiculed the claims of revenue minister Bikram Singh Majithia that the massive crowd which turned out at the Congress rally in Majitha on Saturday was "hired and comprised of outsiders".

In a joint statement issued here on Sunday, district Congress committee (rural) president Gurjeet Aujla, party leaders Lali Majithia, Sawinder Singh Kathunangal and Shailenderjeet Singh Shelly said that it was clear admission of defeat by Majithia. "The turnout was actually a referendum against him," they added.

The Congress leaders said the minister's outbursts were a sign of his frustration as the people of Majitha have risen against his "high handedness and arm-twisting tactics". They advised him to "see the writing on the wall and mend his ways lest it be too late for him".
