Makara Sakranti celebrated in Hamirpur

punjab Updated: Jan 14, 2014 19:11 IST

Makara Sankranti, which marks the beginning of the transition of sun in 'Makara rashi' (Capricorn), was celebrated with enthusiasm and traditional fervour throughout Hamirpur district on Tuesday.

The day is also believed to be marked as arrival of spring in India and start of 'Magha' month.
Makara Sankranti is a solar event, making it perhaps the only Indian festival that falls on the same date as per the Gregorian calendar every year - January14. However, at times, the festival was also celebrated on January 13 or January15 following the lunar calander.
