Makkar expresses concern over hate crime in US

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has expressed concern over the latest suspected hate crime in which 82-year old Piara Singh was attacked while coming out of a gurdwara in the US city of Fresno in California.

In a statement issued here on Thursday, SGPC chief Avtar Singh Makkar has called for stringent punishment to the suspect, Gilbert Garcia, so that such incidents do not re-occur in future.

He said that this latest incident had once agains raised concerns for the Sikhs residing in the US. Pointing out that Sikhs had contributed a lot to the development of the US, Makkar said that the US government was dutybound to ensure the protection of members of the community, who have often been singled out for attacks.

He pointed out that those who indulged in hate crimes had no religion or morality.

SGPC to celebrate 'Sirhind Fateh Divas'

Amritsar: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) would celebrate 'Sirhind Fateh Divas' with fanfare on May 13 and 14 at Fatehgarh Sahib.

The event marks the victory of the Sikhs under Baba Banda Singh Bahadur over the Moguls at Sirhind.

The celebrations would commence with 'akhand path' and 'bhog' on May 13 at the gurdwara of Banda Bahadur at Chapparchirri village near SAS Nagar. A procession would be taken out from Chapparchirri to Fatehgarh sahib.

Sikh martial art 'Gatka' competition would also be held, in which 24 teams would participate. The celebrations would conclude on May 14.
