The police have booked the husband and in-laws of a woman for allegedly driving her to suicide by harassing her for not bearing a child.

The victim, Rinky, 33, allegedly committed suicide in Amarpura area on Thursday.

In her complaint, Nirmala of Gandhi Camp, Jalandhar, said her niece, Rinky, married Vicky of Amarpura in 2003. Vicky is a drummer.

Nirmala said the couple had no child due to which Vicky and his family members used to harass Rinky. She alleged that Vicky and his family, including his father, Jai Gopal, mother, brothers Goldy and Kalu, and sisters-in-law Mamta and Simmi, killed Rinky for not bearing a child and hanged her body to make it appear like suicide.

Sub-inspector Rajinder Prasad at Division Number 2 police station, said the body was found hanging from the ceiling. But taking note of Nirmala’s complaint, they were investigating the matter further.

He said Vicky and six members of his family had been booked under section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC, adding that efforts were on to arrest the accused.
