Police arrested a 35-year-old man, Jagdeesh Singh, on Friday for allegedly attempting to rape a minor girl in Bareta city.

According to complainant Jasveer Kaur, the victim's mother, the accused lured the minor with chocolates when she went to a shop to buy milk. "When my daughter went out in the evening to bring milk, Jagdeesh lured her on the pretext of giving her chocolates. He took her to his room and tried to outrage her modesty. When she didn't return home, I went out to enquire about her and saw the milk can at the shop.
I sensed that she would be in Jagdeesh's room as it was close to the shop. When I went to his room, he escaped, leaving my daughter in a semi-naked state."

An FIR was registered under Section 376 of the IPC and Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012. The accused, who was on the run, was arrested on Friday from the grain market and produced in court.

"He has confessed his crime and is under judicial custody for the next four days," said Kulwant Singh, SHO Bareta.
