strained relationship

A strained relationship led a Ludhiana youth to set his 17-year-old girlfriend on fire after pouring kerosene oil on her in Simla Colony area, Basti Jodhewal, here early Saturday morning.

The girl is in critical condition and has suffered 90% burns on her body. She was rushed to the local civil hospital, but, sensing her critical condition, the doctors referred her to Christian Medical College and Hospital. The victim, whose identity has been concealed because of her age, is a resident of Kailash Nagar, Basti Jodhewal area. She used to work as a domestic help.

A police official said the girl had been asking the accused, identified as Gopi of the same area, to marry her.

While the girl, police said, had been pressuring Gopi to marry her, the latter refuse to fall in line and, after an argument on Saturday, set the victim on fire.

Basti Jodhewal police station house officer (SHO) Balwinder Singh said the girl had recorded her statement that she was going to buy milk at around 6 am of Saturday. The police said as the girl was crossing Simla Colony, the accused attacked her and, after pouring kerosene oil, set the girl on fire.

On hearing her screams, area residents rescued the victim and informed the ambulance service. The SHO said a case of attempt to murder has been registered and a manhunt launched to nab Gopi.
