In a shocking incident, a husband allegedly threw acid on his wife after thrashing her for not meeting his dowry demand. The accused also stabbed her in the neck with a knife and dumped her in a vacant plot in Mehraban area when she got unconscious, assuming her to be dead.
She has suffered multiple injuries, including burn injuries on her neck.
The woman has been identified as Ranjana, 23, hails from Fatehpur of Uttar Pradesh.The accused has been identified as Ravi Kumar, 26, a hosiery worker of Tajpur Road. The case has been registered after following a statement of the victim.
The woman said that on Wednesday, her husband after giving her severe beating threw acid on her neck. When she lost consciousness, he dumped her in a vacant plot in the Meharban area.The accused later filed a missing person report regarding his wife with Meharban police to mislead the incident.
On Thursday, a woman Suneeta from Mehraban area, who works as a field labourer, spotted unconscious Ranjana and provided her medical aid. After regaining senses, Ranjana called her father in Uttar Pradesh, who reached Ludhiana on Friday and got her admitted to a civil hospital. According to doctors she has suffered over 20% burn injuries on her neck but is out of danger.
Ranjana’s father, Suraj Bhan alleged that soon after marriage, Ravi started torturing Ranjana to bring dowry and would often thrash her for the same. On Wednesday night, Ravi thrashed her and asked her to bring ₹1 lakh and an LCD television. After beating Ranjana, he took her to a vacant plot at Mehraban area, threw acid on her and fled the spot.
Mehraban police station official said that late evening on Wednesday, Ravi came and filed a complaint that his wife had gone to a doctor in the locality in the afternoon but did not return. He searched for her but failing to find her, he approached the police.
The accused got married to Ranjana in 2014. They have a two-and-half-month-old child.
A case under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 326-A (acid throwing) and 498-A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered against the accused.ASI Bhupinder Singh, who is investigating the matter, said the police have launched a manhunt for the arrest of the accused.
