Police on Friday booked 25-year-old Ashwani Kumar alias Sunny Baba of the Purana Bazaar area for allegedly raping a 26-year-old woman after promising to marry her.

The woman alleged that she came in contact with Ashwani after she divorced her first husband. The accused had lured her after promising to marry her and started living in her house at Hilltop Colony, Chhoti Bhamiyan. She alleged that Ashwani established physical relations with her, but when she asked him to marry her, he started making excuses. However, when she pressurised her for marriage, the accused took her to Nalagarh in Himachal Pradesh and they tied the knot in January. The accused later deserted her and married another woman.

A case under sections 376 (rape) and 417 (punishment for cheating) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was registered against Ashwani at the Jamalpur police station.

The woman said she had filed a first information report (FIR) against the accused at Nalagarh police station on January 27. After registering the FIR, the Himachal Police had referred the case and investigation to Ludhiana police following that the Jamalpur police lodged a fresh FIR in the case.

Inspector Sukhvir Singh, station house officer of Jamalpur police station, said the police have launched a manhunt for the arrest of the accused.
