An unidentified man committed suicide by hanging himself with a tree on the side of the branch of the Sirhind canal here on Wednesday.
The body of the man, aged between 40 and 55 years, was found in the canal near Guru Nanak Dev Thermal Plant.
The body, according to the police, had fallen into the canal after the rope used by the victim to commit suicide, could not bear the weight and gave way, and the branch of the tree on which the rope had been tied was above the canal.
Investigating officer (IO) Sukhbir Singh said that the body was spotted by some passersby and recovered from the canal with the help of volunteers of the Sahara Jan Sewa, a voluntary organisation.
"The man, who seemed to be suffering from a psychiatric problem, was wearing red tags on both wrists. In the suicide note found in his pocket, he has alleged that some evil sprits will were haunting him and his family and he had taken the extreme step to protect his family from the will," said IO Police were trying to identify the victim.
